Parmenter Street Playground is created.
May 13, 1886
[Summer 1885] Built by the Children’s Mission, it is located in the yard of the Parmenter Street chapel at 20 Parmenter Street. The “sand garden” is the idea of a local woman doctor, who had seen them in Germany, and presented it to the Massachusetts Emergency and Hygiene Association. It is reputed to be the first supervised playground for children in the U.S.
